"Hi! It's from the mortgage underwriters at the Abbey. I've spoken to my supervisor and we could do this for you but we'd need a payslip and 3 months worth of bank statements to prove you haven't gone over your overdraft."
Shit.
"Well, I missed one payment the month before last but that was just a one off..."
"Sorry, we can't help you then. We wouldn't want to commit you to something you can't afford."
"Look, I'm going to be paying LESS, got that, LESS with this loan than I am NOW, plus I WON'T HAVE AN OVERDRAFT!! The payment I missed was less than the amount I'll save each month doing this!!!"
"We deal in certainties, not possibles..."
"ARGH!!!!"

The minute my account is in the black, my mortgage and my banking are going elsewhere.

Anyway, I've defiantly booked the plumber to do the work a week on Saturday which gives me a week and a half to organise a loan. It's a risk, yes, but I gotta have heat this winter.

First Direct aren't too bad either. (Yeah, ok, they're almost HSBC too)

I tend to ignore the marketing junk they send through, but I think they do an offset mortgage too.

Many times banks = wank only they make more mess and they don't feel as good.

Hope you find something soon - wouldn't recommend the NatWest. They are the very depths of poo.

Blech. You guys don't have anything analogous to our credit unions, do you? I don't usually do banks at all. Credit unions are a sort of quasi-socialistic worker's cooperative bank-like thing.... They tend to suck a lot less.
