One Carol's colleagues visited family before Christmas, collecting a bag of presents. Didn't want to open the gifties before The Right Day, left the bag in the living room. Few days later, she noticed the living room was, basically, stinky. Aha, she thought, one of the gifts must be some cheese, which a relative has forgotten to warn me of. So she went to inspect the bag of presents.

Which is when she found out that (a) she had mice, and (b) her cat had lovingly added a present of his own to the collection.
I think you actually get more mice in winter, when the ones that ought to be outdoors demonstrate their squidging-up-tiny skills by finding the tiniest crack in the armour of your house to break in and nibble your soap. And, in our case, to eat most of the poison we put down and hide the rest in my shoes.
