Wot I Dun On My Holiday Part 4
There will be much baseball and Mitchy-type squee-ing in this entry. You've been warned *grins*
I wake up to the happy sound of jackhammers for the last time, though I was sorry to say goodbye to Mary, who'd been a terrific hostess and looked after me splendidly. I made up a bagel with some cream cheese and smoked salmon and wrapped it to take with me, for I was running a bit late and I wanted to get to the hotel by 10-ish. So I packed and scampered to the subway. Halfway downtown I realised I'd left my watch at Mary's apartment. Cue Mitchy-facepalm. I could have trekked back but I didn't fancy lugging all my gear back up the hill to the apartment, explaining to security I needed to get back in to the flat, then lugging the gear back to the station again. So I figured I'd work something out and went on to the hotel.
After a pause for me to scoff my bagel,
jenni411 and I headed out to pick up the Uptown tour bus, the start point for which was just around the corner from us. Handy :) We managed to get two seats together on the first bus there and off we went. The weather was still gorgeous but not quite as hot and there was more of a breeze. It was a pleasure to be out, it really was. The tour guide this time was outstandingly good, full of useful and useless bits of trivia and he really knew his stuff. I'd not done the Uptown tour before, which covered the Upper West and East sides, Central Park and Harlem. Some of the buildings are absolutely gorgeous and it was really interesting to see and hear the history of Harlem. All in all an extremely pleasant couple of hours.
We got off the tour bus at Times Square again and went to Lowes Cinema to buy tickets to see Mission:Impossible 3 on Saturday night. Then after checking email at the internet café, we headed over to Maxie's. Maxie's is a place I found last time I was in NYC, it's famous for its sandwiches. It should also be famous for its prices which are extremely expensive even by NYC standards but you do get what you pay for. I had a HUGE meat loaf sandwich, seriously, the slabs of meat loaf could have fed a family of four.
jenni411 wrestled a bacon cheeseburger into submission - the burger was as big as a saucer - and then we waddled down to Virgin Megastore where I was unleashed in the DVD section. Heheheheh. There was buying, oh yes. First of all, I got the box sets that
adelpha and
kelemvor wanted and then I shopped for me. *glee* I was actually moderately restrained, leaving alone the box sets of Starsky and Hutch and Highlander (mostly because I suspect I can get them cheaper here), but I did indulge in the first season of Grey's Anatomy, Toy Soldiers (tacky movie, about troubled kids being heroes, but I'm a sucker for those), Hero, and Troy.
Shopped out, we headed back to the hotel, where I crashed hard for about an hour and a half. But then it was time to scamper of for the baseball game. Squeee!!
We caught the train to Shea Stadium from Penn and I was practically bouncing with excitement. I must have been too bouncy because at some point, my wallet containing my credit card, debit card and all my cash fell out of my pocket. Or I didn't put it in my pocket properly, one or the other. Either way, I missed it as I was getting off the train. I panicked and ran back to my seat but I couldn't find it and I was scared the train would leave. So I went back to the platform.
jenni411 panicked with me and helped me search my bag but there was no joy. For a minute, everything wasn't so sunny any more :( Then I rallied, Jenni rallied and we agreed that there wasn't anything I could do but ring the LIRR Customer Service when we were in the stadium and put a report in. Cancelling the cards would have to wait until the morning when I could look up the right numbers. So we put it to the back of our minds and I concentrated on enjoying the experience of being at Shea.
Shea is an old stadium and is actually going to be replaced by a much better and newer version by 2008/09. But it's steeped in history and it's a terrific stadium to watch a game in. It's a four tiered stadium, that seats (I think) around 55,000 and it's a circular stadium, with one open section (think a circular horseshoe). From the minute I see it for the first time, I'm grinning like an idiot and I pretty much stay that way for the whole night.
We get to our seats, which are great, close to the field with a good view of the field. I ring LIRR Customer Services, speak to an agent, tell them what happened and they say they'll look into it and call me back. They never do and that's the last I hear from them. Ah well. Of course, I now have no money so when a merchandise vendor walks past with the cutest Mr Met dolls (the Mets mascot), it's
jenni411 who grins and buys one for me. I'm so pleased with him, he's so cute!
jenni411 took a picture of me with the doll that I'll post here when I can :)
Then after that, my attention is on the game. Wow, what a game!! We couldn't have picked a better game to watch if it had been scripted for us. The Mets were playing the Braves, a hated rival, so that meant the atmosphere was nicely charged *grins* It starts out great, with Robert Beltran smacking a solo home run! Hee!! I got to see the Home Run Apple!! *beams* The Braves came back taking a 2-1 lead but then we fought back and levelled it 2-2. And then OH NO! They had a terrific innings and got up to 6-2. Eek! But our next innings, oh BOY! We come out swinging and claw it back to 6-6! It stays like that for two unbelievably tense innings and we go into extra innings. Argh! Top of the 11th, they hit a home run! Noooo!! But the very next innings, we grab the tying run. Phew! I've run out of fingernails to bite at this point :P We're starting to wonder if we'll see the end of the game before our last train leaves when David Wright (ooh he's dreamy!! Squee!) hits a double that gets another Met (I forget who) home for the winning run! The stadium goes nuts!! WOO HOO!! What a game! What a night!
*BIG GRINS*
We have a long wait for the LIRR train home but we natter happily and try to ignore our aching feet. We finally get back around 1am and get to sleep about 2.30am. And it was worth every second :D
