Scribblings from the Mitchy Side

I've acquired a really annoying cough. I can't tell if I've caught a cold or if this is a hangover from not getting my asthma inhalers sorted out in time. Again. *hangs head* I am a bad Mitchy.

I feel a little sniffly and I was sneezing this morning but that's stopped. On the other hand, I have new inhalers and have had since yesterday. If it was asthma related, it should have buggered off by now.

Oh well, can but wait and see.

The extras on the RotK EE kick ARSE! I spent all day yesterday wading through them. Easily over 7 hours worth of features to watch, all good. If I don't nab anyone for RP this evening, I think I will curl up on the sofa with a hot water bottle and munchies and watch the film. What glimpses I've seen of the extra footage look superb.

Spent a fair while today reading Fandom Wank and fanficrants regarding the latest Cassandra Claire kerfuffle. Good grief. Short version: CC, her flatmate and CC's b/f were robbed at the weekend. Thieves took their 3 laptops plus a box of toys the flatmate was due to take into the hospital she works at. B/F is a grad student in Computer Studies, flatmate is a medical student, CC is a starving artist, so heidi8 created a paypal account and started a drive to get funds to replace the laptops. The funds were raised inside 10 hours. Initially the drive was confined to friends and then opened up when more and more people posted on Cassie's journal saying they'd like to help. Well, the vitriol this has produced is mind boggling. I have mixed feelings over some aspects of the business but bottom line? It's none of anyone else's business what people choose to do with their money, and if they want to help a friend or simply want to help out of respect for the pleasure CC's fanfiction has given, then no harm, no foul. No-one was forced to donate and CC herself never asked for such a thing to happen. However, reading some of the wank-age, apparently this is an evil thing, all CC fans are deluded morons and (and this was the best bit) how did anyone know this wasn't a massive internet scam to buy 3 people brand new laptops?

Now I'm as cynical as the next person. I do think that Cassie herself could have survived without a laptop, given she's an author. Pen and paper work too. But what did her flat mate or b/f do to anyone? He's a comp sci guy, he needs a laptop. I admit the whole "box of toys" thing seemed a bit much but then the flatmate is a medical student and does work at a hospital, that's been established long before this so it's not exactly completely out of left field. Nor do I have any reason on this good, green earth to think that Heidi, who's a lawyer, would get involved on a scam of this scale. Nor are 3 top of the line computers being bought, rather the basics are being got and the rest is going to charity. And let's face it, how is it bad if a charity benefits at the end of the day? Dammit, if a community chooses to rally round its members, let it. I've seen other drives in both this and other fandoms without this level of vitriol being thrown around. What's wrong with people?

I'm not sure why I'm so cross. Possibly because there have been numerous wish lists floating around LJ this past week and no-one's given a toss about that. But apparently, if you're a Big Name Fan, all bets are off. Bah!
