mitchy at 01:15pm on 05/01/2005You may recall that last year the double radiator in my lounge sprang a leak, necessitating it being turned off. I still haven't replaced it so I've had no heat in the lounge but it's been ok, the heat from the rest of the rooms keeps the place warm enough.
However, it's looking like the radiator replacement thing is getting more urgent because now the small radiator in the kitchen is leaking. I found a large pool of water on the kitchen floor last night, too big to be a random overflow from the sink, too small to be a major pipe leak. In the cold light of day, it was easy to track the leak to the teeny tiny drip drip coming from the bottom of the little radiator.
I've spent an hour looking at diagrams on the web and I think I've managed to turn the radiator off. It's still dripping, but I am hoping that will stop once the radiator is drained. If it doesn't, I'll have to get someone in to turn it off properly for me. Which will cost in the region of £40-50 quid, for a five minute job, if that. Grrr. Unless I can get someone to fix it as a favour but I don't know anyone who is any good at plumbing. Except possibly Nigel, Karen's hubby. Hmm. May have to consider that.
So anyway, the real dilemma is: Do I say "Fuck it", raid the savings for the couple of grand I'll need and get ALL the radiators replaced and sort the problem out once and for all OR do I go for the short term solution, assuming I've turned the radiator off successfully, and ignore it for a while longer. I don't NEED that kitchen radiator, I could have it taken out, frankly, because the kitchen gets ridiculously hot as it is.
I suppose it wouldn't hurt to get some quotes for the job, it does need doing. The bathroom radiator will go next, I reckon, closely followed by the one in my bedroom and if that goes, I'm screwed, really.
