mitchy: (Rip your lungs out)

I was watching another bawlsome episode of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition". A promising basketball player, Rodney Anderson, was shot four times in the back and paralysed. The EMHE team did a mind-blowing job on the house (they actually built two) and I'm not going to go into details cos I'll bawl all over again.

Two things however, really just hit hard. One was a "This should just not happen" and one is a "There are no words".

This should just not happen: For the first time, the EMHE missed deadline and worked well into the evening of the eighth day. Everyone was flagging so Ty took the designers down the street to the spot where the young man was shot. There, he played the tape recording of the 911 call received on the day of the shooting. Amongst the screaming, you hear "Please help me! Please help me! My uncle's been shot!" "What's your name?" "Mellone (sic) but I'm only 12!" As one of the designers said, no kid should have to make that call but in South Central LA, that's just far too commonplace. And I think I have problems? Feh!

There are no words: Rodney described the shooting, which was a case of mistaken identity by a gangland thug. He was lying on the pavement with four bullets in his back and the shooter walked over to him to look at his face and realised he shot the wrong guy. So, and this is the bit that blows my mind, the shooter said "Oh hey, sorry, wrong guy! Do you want me to get you some help?"

Great jumping Jesus.
