So it's been announced that Catherine Tate will be the Doctor's new assistant for Season 4, although Freema Agyeman will be back mid-season and will appear in 3 episodes of Torchwood.
This has caused outraged howls practically everywhere but actually, I'm looking forward to it. For a series, Tate's character can be developed and I thought Tate and Tennant (sounds like a firm of solicitors :)) had a pretty good chemistry together. So I'm not rending my garments and gnashing my teeth and will wait and see how things develop. I'm fully prepared to grumble if it doesn't live up to expectations but right now, I'm thinking it has potential to be good.
BUT - what on earth was the problem with Freema? I really liked her character and, apart from the bloody love story angle which hopefully won't feature next year, thought she was a vast improvement over Billy Piper, of whom I was never a fan. I can only assume this is part of a big story arc that will crossover from Torchwood or that RTD wants two companions in the Tardis again. I have no objections to Catherine Tate stepping in but I'm really surprised they feel the need to reduce Freema's role. *shrugs* Ah well, we'll just have to wait and see.
