In 1960, in the USA, the American Football League was formed as a rival to the National Football League. Within years, it became apparent that the AFL wasn't going to disappear like so many other rival leagues and in 1966, serious merger talks were held. One of the agreements of the merger was that the AFL and NFL champion teams would meet in a World Championship game at the end of the season. According to legend, then commissioner of the NFL, Pete Rozelle, wanted to call the game "The Big One" (*shudderfits*). Kansas City Chiefs owner, Lamar Hunt, suggested a stop gap name. He got the idea from seeing his children play with a toy called the Super Ball, and also the naming convention of post season games in college football, which were called Bowl Games after the very first one, played in the Rose Bowl in California.

And so the Super Bowl came into being.

Today it's the XLIII Super Bowl (they never found a better name), being contested between the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Outside of the F A Cup, this is my favourite annual sporting event and I look forward to it every year and this will be the 23rd Super Bowl I've stayed up late to watch :) I hope all who watch have a fabulous time. To the winning fans, I say "Woot!", to the losing fans, I offer major condolences. Let's hope it's a great game!

I adore Wikipedia, I make a point of reading the main page every day, and seeing what's of interest. I have fallen victim to the curse of Wikipedia many times, as I'm sure many people have. You know what I mean, you'll start off by looking up that person what played that role in that movie and end up reading about the history of gem mining in Afghanistan...two hours later. :P

Today, however, I've discovered a new great game. Picture the scene: A mousey is chomping on some toast but wishes to look up some facts on Wikipedia about the Super Bowl. However, that would require putting the toast down to retrieve the keyboard (I don't have a computer desk in the lounge, so the keyboard has to rest on my lap). The mousey does not wish to do this. So she eyes the main page and spots a story about the coach of the Atlanta Hawks. She clicks on that link and goes to the page, where she finds a link to the NBA. Within that page, is a link to the general United States of America entry so she goes to that, where she finds a link to a page about American sports. Clicking that takes her to a page all about the NFL and within that is the link to the Super Bowl entry!

Toast chomped, Super Bowl stuff found, keyboard not used - all in seven clicks of a mouse. The mousey was highly amused :)

I suspect there could be a good challenge game in that. Pick a random subject, see how many clicks it takes you to get to a page about it, using ONLY the links available for that day on the main page :) I'm sure you can do it in seven clicks or less with a bit of practice :D

From [livejournal.com profile] halcyon_shift:-

1. Leave me a comment saying, 'interview me'.
2. I will respond by asking you five questions. I get to pick the questions.
3. update your LJ with the answers to the questions. (You must do this, even if it's filtered for my eyes only!)
4. include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.
5. when others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

1. If you ruled the world, what would be your first policy act?
Hrm. Well, it's trite but I think world peace would pretty much have to be a must, else there'd be no world for me to rule :P

2. What was the first poem that really struck a chord?
Ooooh, goood question. Hrm. *ponderponderponder* I've always enjoyed poetry. I'm guessing it was probably a WWI poem we studied in middle school, the very famous "Dulce et Decorum Est". But I think I'll go with a poem by James Michie about a conscientious objector in WWI if only for introducing me to his poetry. I can't recall the title now and can't lay my mitts on the book of his poetry I have, damnit. I may have to come back and re-edit :)

3. If you could buy one thing, any price, what would it be (no resale *g*)
A house in NYC. Or London.

4. What's your favourite place to be?
New York City :) or London (are you spotting a theme?)

5. When did you learn to drive?
Oh lor'....*counts back carefully* *time passes* I'm faaairly sure it was early 1987..so that's 22 years this year. Coooool! :) It was the second attempt though, I fluffed two things on the first attempt *grumbles*.
