I must owe all my techie friends so much beer at this point......
I use Thunderbird 3.1.6 for my email client. I have my demon email account and my googlemail account set up there and all has been well. Until tonight. Everything was fine and then I had to reboot. On reconnecting, I suddenly could no longer send or receive email on my googlemail account. I HADN'T CHANGED ANYTHING!!
I changed both the incoming and outgoing server to xxx.gmail.com, because according to various forums that helped. I can now receive but I still can't send. These are the two error messages I get on trying to send email:-
An error occurred sending mail: THe mail server sent an incorrect greeting: Cannot establish SSL with SMPT server 209.85.227.109:465, SSL_connect error 336142597
Sending of message failed.
The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server smtp.gmail.com was lost in the middle of the transaction. Try again or contact your network administrator.
It's not being blocked by the firewall, I've triple checked. I've set both servers up exactly as instructed on various set up guides - nothing. I've tried turning all security off for both incoming and outgoing - nothing. And apart from the googlemail to gmail instruction, I've found nothing helpful online. Googlemail's support appears to be pretty crap.
Anyone have any bright ideas? I can't figure out why it would just suddenly stop working like that.
ETA: Okaaay, never mind. It's fixed. I turned the security off the outgoing server, reset it to googlemail, rebooted and, umm, it's working now. I have NO IDEA wtf that was about.
