If your throat is bad, and things like Strepsils aren't touching it, find some called Decquacaine. They're over-the-counter versions with benzocaine in, so they are really rather good at numbing things.

The only problem is they taste a bit nasty, and I'm not sure if they're suitable for asthmatics. The pharmacist should be able to tell you though.
