So there I am at work, minding my own business, when Kate the Auditor catches my eye and indicates she'd like a quiet word with me. Curiously, I sidled into the back office and sat down. I was fairly sure I wasn't in trouble, so I wondered what was in the wind.

Seems they've tapped me to be the Head Clerk at the Honkin' Big New Store that's opening up sometime around April. Tapped in the sense that Kate and the regional manager who thinks the store's going to be in his area have got me on top of their list of Head Clerks they could poach.

Now, this has to be taken in context. Yes, it's tremendously flattering they think I could do it but let's not get carried away. Stevenage has three clerks and the Powers That Be want us to have only two, ultimately. I live in range of the proposed new store, so I could commute without them having to make travel arrangements. I don't have any family committments that would mean I would be against commuting, and Kate at least knows this. Plus, I'm a Head Clerk, which means I have experience and can hit the ground running without training. All big plusses for them. Let's consider it from my point of view.

Good things:-

Prestige of being Head Clerk in Shiny New Store, thus being able to shine in spotlight for a few months.
New Stores get lots of attention from the Powers That Be, see bit above about shining.
I would start the office up from scratch. Clean slate, so I get to set it up and it will be MY office. Oh sure, I have to conform to Company Guidelines, but there's no baggage there, I wouldn't be following in anyone else's footsteps.
Big challenge - this store would be vastly busier that Stevenage.
Possibly more admin staff, meaning the title of Head Clerk might actually mean something.
It will look simply STUNNING on the CV.

Not so Good Things:-
Hideous commute, from the looks of it. I figure maybe hour and a half each way in vile traffic through vile junctions. I may try and scout it out a bit over the next two days I have off, just to confirm this.
There's no guarantee of a pay rise. Not even a little one.
New Stores get a lot of attention from the Powers That Be. If you DON'T shine....erk.
Busier than Stevenage. As in "hellishly busy", if the company is lucky.
No change in hours, shifts, lack of weekends and all the other things I hate about the job.

Something To Remember:-
I've recently tossed my CV over to my buddy Troo who's passed it to her boss, because they are taking on new people in various departments there. The salary will be a lot better, even if I go in at a looooow level. As in maybe 2k better....

Ack!

It's like buses, I swear!!

I have to say, I do like the idea of opening up a new store, being part of that. It must be tremendously exciting, even though the lustre would only be short term. It would be a terrific thing to have on the CV and it would be a real challenge. If they do come up with a pay rise with the offer, I'd probably ditch plans to bail on them just yet.

Unless the other job came to fruition. Then I'd have to really, seriously look at both and decide what's best.

Gosh, it's nice to have options! :)

In other work related news, Dennie and Lisa managed to work together for six hours without killing each other. By my observations, this is due to Lisa biting her tongue a lot and being totally professional. She must be burning up khama at a vastly accelerated rate :P
