Wicked: The Coherent(ish) Review

So this was my day yesterday, along with my more detailed thoughts about the show, now that I've almost stopped bouncing incoherently. It got a bit long, she says, understatedly, so I've chopped it up into sections. You can read or skip as you please :)

Getting There )

The Theatre and Pre-Show )

There at last! )

The Show - here be mild spoilers to the plot, be warned!! )

I shuffled out in something of a daze, I have to admit, which eventually gave way to total euphoria. I think I had a grin on my face the whole way home and it took me until 3am to wind down enough to go to bed and go to sleep. What a show! Worth every penny that was and I shall tell Aunty Eve so when I see her next weekend, because it was thanks to her I went and thanks to the Shadowy Ticket Buying Committee for enabling me to buy a camera with other funds :) And I have to, just HAVE to, go and see this again, oh yes. *nods determinedly*

Oh to hell with it, I must squee. Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!! *bounces off, like a very happy Mitchy*

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

Oh

My

God.

Wicked was just absolutely f'kin' amazing. I was totally and completely blown away. I mean, I knew it was good, but I had no IDEA how good it really, really is. Proof that you just can't beat the live experience of a theatre show.

Kerry Ellis was absolutely brilliant as Elphaba. I mean, I went in basically hoping she wouldn't disappoint me, because if you've been listening/watching via YouTube to Idina Menzel for weeks, believe me, you don't think anyone else can do the role. Hoo boy howdy, was I wrong there. Her renditions of "The Wizard and I" and "No Good Deed" rocked the house. Her "Defying Gravity" was her own (OK, Idina's got that one nailed still but it was no shabby imitation I heard tonight, it still kicked arse) and the acting was flawless. I had a few problems with Diane Pilkinton's Galinda, mostly to do with her squeaky voice in a couple of songs, but her comic timing was top drawer, her version of "Popular" was excellent and she and Kerry were a pretty good match in the big duets.

I will doubtless ramble more about this tomorrow, when I've come down a little and stopped bouncing about going "OMG SQUEEEE!!!", but suffice to say, I am SERIOUSLY trying to work out how to save up enough pences to see Kerry Ellis again before she leaves to go to the Broadway Wicked in July :D

WOOO HOOOOOO!!

*bounces about like an over-excited Mitchy*

And yeh, the thought HAS occurred to me - if I'm like this for Wicked, WTF am I going to be like for Chess? I may need to be sedated.....
