Belated Movie Reviews
I loved this movie :) What wasn't to love? Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, lots of guns, chases, explosions and a very silly plot. An excellent and humurous script and superbly played by the two leads. *sighs happily* This is right up there with Batman Begins as my favourite film of 2005 so far. Pitt and Jolie, regardless of any off set rumour mongering, really do have on-screen chemistry and it pays dividends. You'll be rooting for them all the way through. The supporting cast is no less excellent, particularly Vince Vaughn, who seems to be everywhere these days. Highly recommended by the Mitchy - 9/10
Holy cow. OK. I thought I knew what I was getting with this movie: an artistic exercise in bringing a comic book to the screen, to the extent that the entire thing was shot against green screen, using the comic book as a visual reference. What I didn't expect was to be so emotionally engaged in the characters and this is a huge tribute not only the directing but outstanding turns from a stellar cast. Mickey Rourke was unreconisable under the prosthetics but he turns in a powerhouse performance as the battered and battering Marv, a slugger who is given a night to remember by a hooker only to wake up next to her corpse. In his quest for vengeance, he slaughters several people, very slowly, in a variety of unpleasant ways and yet you root for him every step of the way. Rourke really brings this big guy to life.
Another star who is superb in his role is Bruce Willis as Hartigan, the cop determined to do the right thing in a very corrupt city. Jessica Alba is simply stunning, as well, as Nancy, who's the link between the three stories that make up the movie. And Elijah Wood doesn't so much bury Frodo as drop him off the top of Niagara Falls in a concrete overcoat :)
It's not for the faint of heart, it's grim, unremittingly so, but there is always a thread of hope there, however slender. And you need a reasonable strong stomach, say, Kill Bill strong, for even though it's filmed in black and white and all the blood is white, you know what's going on. Nevertheless, I'd say watch it. Maybe as a rental, you don't need the big screen, although it does give a bigger canvas against which to admire the way the comic book has been brought to the screen. Recommended by the Mitchy - 7/10
