How annoying is this? I've just read this terrific book called "Death and Restoration" by Iain Pears, all about a Art Theft detective in Rome and her art dealer/college lecturer to-be-husband. There are seven books in the series. The other six are all for sale, via Amazon marketplace, very, very cheaply, and guess what? Total cost of six books is £3.85. Shipping.....£16. SIXTEEN QUID! Because, of course, all the books are with different marketplace sellers who have their individual shipping charges, even where they are only charging a penny (yes, you read that right, two of the books are for sale for 0.01p) for the product.

You'd think they'd figure out this shipping business a bit better, it doesn't cost that much to ship an effing paperback book!

I've been thwarted. Foiled. *glowers* I wish to kick things.

Actually, there's a reason for that

As I understand it, Amazon doesn't take a cut from shipping (or and this bit might be a bit more wrong - they even give some refund back for certain types of shipping) and they do on the actual sale price of the book. Thus by overcharging shipping the sellers pay Amazon less while getting a higher margin.

*grumbles* Still sucks. The least they could do is put books into batches and justify the shipping costs.

Ooh... the only Iain Pears I've read is An Instance of the Fingerpost, which I remember as being brilliant and utterly entralling, but I've never read any of his others. I take it since you're trying to buy his entire back catalogue, that you would recommend him?

Not read AIotF, though people have raved about it/hated it on rec.arts.mystery in about equal measure. Must give it a try :)

These books are very different but they're just gosh darn readable. Light, but not cosy, great characters, good mysteries and a stunning city setting.

All of which is a long winded way of saying "Yes, yes I would" :)
