mitchy at 05:23pm on 18/11/2005Work this afternoon was much enlivened by the fire alarm going off around 2pm - and it wasn't a drill :P We all grabbed coats and scampered out, a bit disconcerted that there was a faint whiff of smoke.
The meeting place for our department was in the front visitors car park so we all lingered there, waiting for the all clear. A fire engine duly arrived and there was much investigating. Turns out it was something to do with either a toaster or a kettle blowing a fuse and generating enough smoke to trigger the alarm. After about 30 minutes we were allowed back in. which was good, because although it was sunny and dry, it was also damn chilly out there!
There were two amusing side effects though. Some of the folks at the Hall were doing some fund raising for Children in Need, and they cleaned up during the wait, taking lottery tickets and cakes around. Lots of bored people they could collar and guilt into parting with a pound :D And the second thing was, many were in fancy dress, which is why Elvis was one of our Fire Marshals :D
