I was scheduled to go and visit my little Aunty Eve today, down in Rainham, in Kent. She phoned me 15 minutes ago and said "Have you heard about the explosion dear?" Err, no, actually, but I went to the Beeb's website and looked and went "Crikey o'Reilly!" (Well Aunty Eve was on the phone at the time and I couldn't swear ;))

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4517962.stm

That's barely 15 miles from me and I didn't hear or feel a thing. *shakes head* Anyway, Aunty Eve was worried it would affect me travelling today and at first I said no, because the M25 hadn't been closed. Then I checked further and there's stationary traffic going clockwise from the A1M junction - I guess because the M1 is closed, everyone who wants to head North will have to head to the M11. Ack.

So we've had to reluctantly postpone the visit today. It would take me 2 hours plus just to get there and then on the way back, I'd catch all the Lakeside AND Blue Water traffic. *shudders* Oh Aunty Eve did sound all upset because she thought that meant she wouldn't see me at all! But I promptly cheered her up by telling her I'd see her next Saturday instead :) Like I wouldn't see my little Aunty Eve before Christmas! *snugs the Aunty Eve*

Actually, although it's disappointing, it's probably for the best. I am so shattered I could use a quiet day and next Saturday I'll be able to leave a bit earlier on more sleep and make a better day of it. Gives me time to get her a Christmas pressie too.

Hey, any of my flist up on their classical music? I want to buy her a cd but am not sure what to go for. She's very old school in her preferences so it would have to be something by one of the big guns, like Mozart or Beethoven or whomever. Or maybe I could find something with a big choir, like the King's College - she'd like that I think. Hmm. Any suggestions or should I just trawl amazon? :)

There's always Handel's Messiah--big this time of year!

*rubs hands with glee* Oooh, a classical music recommendation! How "old school" is your Aunty Eve? You mentioned Beethoven and Mozart, both of whom were late 1700s - early 1800s (in Beethoven's case). Personally, I adore Bach, but he's later, mid-to-late 1800s. (Mmmmmm, Glenn Gould's "Goldberg Variations"... *swoons*)

I agree with the poster about Handel, but I'd pick something other than "The Messiah" simply because it's so popular--your aunty might already have it, though a different recording of it would be good, too. (Now we're slipping into real classical buff territory, the merits of this recording over that!)

I quite like Scarlatti, if your aunty is into the Italians circa 1700. :-) There's really so much to choose from!

Ah-HAH! An expert :) Are you on MSN or AIM at all? Perhaps we could have a real-life natter about it? :)

Well, I'm by no means an actual "expert", but I know my way around the classical catalogue. Unfortunately, I'm only on Yahoo. If you like, we could carry on via email. :-)
