Christmas Dr Who

That was shed loads of fun :) Anyone get the feeling they're cranking up the edginess factor and the snappy dialogue for this next series?

There were at least two pieces of dialogue that made me hoot with laughter - damn my goldfish memory, because I can't recall 'em now! I will rely on the rest of my flist to quote it at length over the next few days and jog my memory :) I did love the running gag with "Harriet Jones, Prime Minister" "Yes, we know who you are". *snickers*

I still don't like Rose. Sorry, Rose fans, but she just annoys me. She was so pathetic at the beginning, she even annoyed Mickey. Course, as soon as everything went the way she wanted it to, everything was fine. Geh. Tennant is, however, completely brilliant, I think I already like him more than Ecclestone. But then in this role, the Dr's got more of a nasty streak and that always appeals.

Didn't think a huge amount of the bad guys but then they were really just there to provide the threat and set up the Great Moral Question at the end, rather than have any depth or, you know, meaning.

Mickey - The Man Who Doesn't Learn, bless his cotton socks. I like him though :)

Special effects - aww, c'mon, that spaceship sucked! But the blue light thing was quite cool. And the regrowing hand. Though the too big sleeve to hide perfectly ok hand was a bit tacky. And seriously, why the hell didn't the Incredible Bouncing Tardis not demolish everything it hit during that landing? However, I liked that bit, so I'll let 'em off ;)

Overall Mitchy Rating = 7/10 (for ep) 10/10 (for the new doctor)

Nice hinting around Torchwood I thought, and Tennant was cool once he got going, even if the "I'm dying" went on too long.

Also, timescale? It's about ten years later, right? Mickey should have moved on, surely? Plus Torchwood can't be present day if Aliens of London was... Ah well.

Shame my viewing was distracted by the parents; yes, of course you can watch it in here, no we don't mind, we'll watch as well. And hoover. And chat loudly. So I missed some of the dialogue first half. But yeah, bouncing Tardis was cool. It didn't cause damage because, um, it's not that heavy in the air and has no mass because it's all in another dimension and, well, it's a TV show?

Hi there, don't think I've seen you comment on my LJ before :)

Yes, the timescale baffled me a bit, in terms of Mickey, but then thinking about it, it occurred to me Rose may have made visits in the interim time that we don't know about. Travelling in a time machine has its uses :)

And hoovering during Dr Who should be illegal!

I followed the link you put up in a comment on [livejournal.com profile] lithium_doll's journal, just because it's Dr Who.

The hoovering annoyed, but otoh, I'd have had to wait for the DVD release otherwise; no TV at home.. You'd have also thought that the Dr would know what Harriet did at the end on the grounds he knew she'd build the new golden age (tm) and knew her background. Ah well; regeneration created amnesia? It's not like they haven't used that as a plot point for every Doctor yet.

I thought Tennant was all right, but Ecclestone is still my favourite. This guy seems less passionate to me. His eyes don't have the same stark madness as the 9th Doctor.

Rose, well, I like her more than most of the Doc's companions...since SJ Smith they seem to have been a badly painted collection of wooden dolls. Perry? Ace? My god, I couldn't watch them! And to be honest, her droopy wailiness is a bit how I would be if I had to give up Tardis life. Oh for the chance!

Oh gods, I'd managed to blot out all memory of Perry and Ace. In fact, that would be right around the time I stopped watching Dr Who. OK, compared to them, Rose isn't so bad, but I still don't like her. Bring back Tegan! Or Romana! I saw from the clips at the end that SJS and K9 might be back for a visit this series :) That'll be cool!

Some bits I liked, some bits I thought were a bit heavy handed. I got why Jones did her thing and why the Doctor did his thing, just wish they hadn't gone there. But otherwise, looks like I'll be watching the next series *nodnod*

"There's an Act of Parliment banning my autobiography."

"From the day they arrive on the planet, blinking step into the sun, there is more to be seen than ever be seen, more to do ... no hold on. Sorry, that's the Lion King."

"Witchcraft"
"Timelord."

"Wanna know the best bit? This new hand is a fightin' hand."

[identity profile] mitchy.livejournal.com 2005-12-27 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
Hee! I knew you'd remember some of the quotes :) It was the "Witchcraft, Timelord!" one that made me giggle lots!

I loved David Tennant, but then I knew I would; Penelope Wilon was fab, similarly; Rose was annoying but not as bad as she could have been, as per.

Loved the cheesy nods to sci-fi staples.

Best bit: the Christmas tree shaped hole in the wall of the flat - that just amused me no end!

[identity profile] mitchy.livejournal.com 2005-12-27 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
I just loved the whole cheesey notion that all the Dr needed was a nice cup of tea. That appealed lots!

And Penelope Wilton is fab. I thought I glimpsed her in the end of show season preview clips, so hopefully that character comes back. "Harriet Jones, Prime Minister." "We know who you are" *snickers*

Now I'm all agog to see this spin off show with Captain Jack Harkness *glee* Wonder if we'll get a glimpse of that via this new series of Dr Who?

[identity profile] itsjustaname.livejournal.com 2005-12-28 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Spin-off show? What is this? I have no knowledge.

[identity profile] mitchy.livejournal.com 2005-12-28 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh it's fab! Cap'n Jack in his own show *swoons* And it's going to be called *pause for dramatic effect* Torchwood (sound familiar?). And, umm, that's about all I know at the mo, it's listed as being in production on imdb. Some judicious googling should fish up some details *nodsnosdnods*

Ooh... interesting... I'm sure you will keep us up-to-date on developments hmm? *grin* I rely on you to keep your ear to the ground on important affairs of state like this!

I have to admit I was disappointed with the plot. I mean, I know it's Dr Who and the plot is always that aliens have come to take over/destroy the Earth but they just seemed to be bugger all threat, it was a little too easy to defeat them. There was a definite absence of tension.

I liked the Christmas Tree of Death though, excellent.
