An Eventful Day
Well, today had pretty much everything :)
It was Beanpole's last day today, she was retiring, having worked for the council, in one capacity or another, since 1963. (Don't do the maths, it's frightening.) All week there's been plotting and planning and it all came off beautifully today. The decorations were fabulous - I'm hoping to snag some pics to put up - loads of people turned up to the lunchtime bash, the speeches were funny and she loved the gifts. She got a watch - well it IS traditional! This wasn't gold, though, this was an extremely nice lady's Rotary watch. There was a set of AWT saucepans, which was what she asked for. A DVD of Bleak House, the recent BBC production, and I think there were vouchers for her to spend :)
I did very little work today, I mostly spent time helping prep banners or carry things down to the function room where the party was held. It was during the set up stage that the accident happened. LowKeyD offered to help with the lifting and shifting. At some point while I was out of the room, he attempted to lift something or push something and turn at the same time. When I got back, he was sitting in a chair, keeping very, very still, and white faced with pain: he'd put his back out somehow. An ambulance was called and they gave him oxygen for some while before lifting him onto the carry-chair and taking him off to hospital. He called later afternoon and the poor bastard has got a prolapsed disc. Ouch! No wonder he was in agony!
Naturally, because of that, the party room didn't get as decorated as we'd planned but obviously, it wasn't really the time to be climbing over the paramedics and pinning up streamers and balloons. It didn't matter though, because the room was soon full of chatting folks and the party took on a life of it's own. Beanpole threatened to get emotional once or twice, saying goodbye to people she's worked with for 10 years or more. Hell, even I'm going to miss her, even though I haven't known her long. She was such a rock of practicality and sensibility. Damn, she's gonna leave a mighty big gap.
Anyway, food was scoffed, booze was drunk and there was even cider! Hee! I had a can but didn't have more because I was driving. Which was a pity. PartyGirl got pretty squiffy on Southern Comfort and had to be fed tea when we got back to the office. She attempted to take the teabag out of her tea but kept dropping it back in the mug. And then she managed to snap the base of the spoon off into her tea! At that point, I took over for her :) She was ok by the time she left but she's going to have to come in on Monday to finish off some work. Ah, I hear you say, shouldn't she be in on Monday anyway? Nope, she's term time only and she now has two weeks off for Easter.
*yawns* This evening has been spent watching Starsky and Hutch and impatiently watching the clock count down on the Sweet Charity auction. I'm still the top bidder on one item but I suspect I might get foiled for my bid on
lithium_doll's fic writing skillz. *sharpens keyboard and lies in wait* Only 40 mins left! Hee!
Once it's over, I must go to bed! Early start tomorrow as I'm off to see Aunty Eve, who has been rather poorly of late :( When a hospital starts talking about "Well if this treatment doesn't work, we're looking at a blood transfusion" on a 94 year old, it doesn't bode well. I'd planned to see her this weekend anyway, just now it's a bit more urgent. She claims to be feeling better but I don't quite believe her. I think she feels like crap but it's just better than it was last week when she was in hospital. Beh. Anyway, we'll see.
38 mins! *goes back to staring at the clock*
