I slept well and woke up feeling much perkier. This was partly helped by closing the windows a little bit which blocked a lot of the noise. Didn't do squat for the jackhammers, mind, but at least they started later, at 8.30am, this time around.

After the by now traditional breakfast of a bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese, I scampered off to 50th Street station and from there to the hotel, Best Western President. [livejournal.com profile] jenni411 was waiting for me in the lobby, as it was too early for her to check in. We decided to head over to the Lincoln Centre and see David Blaine's latest stunt. For those not in the know, he was spending a week inside a plastic water filled bubble, regrettably with an oxygen supply, at the end of which he was going to attempt to break a world record by holding his breath for nine minutes. We got to the centre and eventually found our way to the area where the stunt was taking place. It was pretty cool, in the sense of seeing this huge goldfish bowl in the middle of a plaza. There was a shortish queue to walk past the bowl and peer in, so we did. I did it just to be sure it was Blaine in there and I can report it was. He waved to everyone who went past, but I have to say, he looked pretty out of it to me.

From there we headed into Times Square, just so I could check my email and get an address I needed. We had intended to do some museums but the weather was absolutely gorgeous. Blue skies and brilliant sunshine, with the temperature in the high seventies. Hee! So we decided that we'd do one of the open top bus tours. We bought the All Loops ticket, figuring that even though we wouldn't have time to do all the tours, we would have time to do tour and it still worked out cheaper that way. We started off with the Downtown loop of the tour, which basically covers the area south of Central Park, going past all the big Manhattan landmarks like the Empire State, Wall Street, the Chrysler building, the shopping and textile districts etc. We had a good tour guide and it was glorious to be sitting out in the sunshine, looking at the sights. In fact, it got so warm we moved seats at one point so that we were sheltered a bit from the sun by the front of the bus. I have to say the tours are a great way to see the city and get a sense of what is where, and the guides will point out good places to visit and good restaurants that are recommended.

We hopped off the bus a couple of stops shy of the finish point and scampered back to the hotel, where I was attacked by a sudden nap. There was gentle snoring, so I'm told :) When we were rested, we headed off to a Greek restaurant that [livejournal.com profile] jenni411 has been to before, where we were going to meet Mary and treat her to dinner to thank her for letting me stay with her for a few days. Having successfully found the restaurant from the hotel, we had plenty of time to stop into an Irish pub where I was happy to find more cider to drink *grins* They were playing a selection of 80's music that had me and [livejournal.com profile] jenni411 bopping happily and led to "Name your top ten songs" and "Name your top ten movies" games.

At 7pm, we scampered back across the road to meet Mary and get down to the serious business of ordering food. While in Toronto, I'd been much entertained at a Greek restaurant by the flaming cheese starter and I was assured that the same dish was available at Uncle Nick's. It was *hehehe* and Mary was armed with a camera. ...

Hee :) Mary also took a cool picture of [livejournal.com profile] jenni411 and myself:-

The flaming cheese was great and very, very tasty. Sadly, I was less than enamoured of my choice of main course, ground beef steaks, which were bland and pretty uninspired. Never mind. After food we headed back to the pub to watch baseball and have more booze :) Once we were sure of the final scores, Mary and I headed for the Subway and [livejournal.com profile] jenni411 headed back to the hotel. Mary was sneaky and took a picture of me in the Subway. I post it here because actually, it's one of the few photos of me I really like.

Mary is such a good photographer. She's actually got a whole batch of photos framed that are going to be (hopefully) displayed in a friend's restaurant for a month. And she's doing a photojournalism course. Honestly, I have no idea how she fits all the stuff she does into her week :)
