You all did pretty well and the ones nobody got, I'm not terribly surprised about, except for "The Sting", which should be compulsory viewing for anyone who likes movies :)
1. "After what happened to Luther, I don't think I can get more than two, three hundred guys." - Henry Gondorff, The Sting
My favourite movie of all time, ever! It's a classic caper movie, with a couple of great twists and it's Robert Redford and Paul Newman! Squee! Seriously, it's a great movie, check it out.
2. "Nothing, nothing, really. It was just a little classroom, it sort of burned down." - Judy Maxwell, "What's Up, Doc?"
Yes, it's a film with Barbra Streisand. Try not to hold it against me. It's one of the few screwball (ish) comedies that I've a) been able to sit through and b) genuinely rolled around laughing at. There are some terrific lines, a superb supporting cast and one of the best comedy chases EVER. Give it a try :)
The entire exchange that the line was taken from is as follows:-
Judy: Well, this last one was not my fault.
Howard: What happened?
Judy: Nothing, nothing, really. It was just a little classroom, it sort of burned down, well blew up actually.
Howard: Political activism?
Judy: Chemistry major.
Howard: I see.
3. "Well, of course you don't feel fine, you're in "Deliverance" country surrounded by a bunch of sober freaks!" - Jasper, "28 Days"
This isn't the best movie ever but it is the one I watch a lot, a real "comfort" movie. OK, so it's Sandra Bullock but again, try not to hold that against it and me :) Once more there's a superb supporting cast, it's tightly directed by Betty Thomas and it has some genuinely laugh out loud bits as well as some poignant scenes. Nothing startling original plot wise, but I don't care. Great fun.
4. "Welcome to the New World. God save you, if it is right that he should do so." - William Thatcher, "A Knight's Tale".
This comes under the same heading as a lot of the movies on here - real comfort movies. This one is
lithium_doll's fault entirely and I've now watched it more times than I can count. Great cast - Paul Bettany and Alan Tudyk! Hee! - fun story, what can I say? I'm a sucker for these :)
5. "You made a woman meow?" - Jess, "When Harry Met Sally"
Probably one of my favourite movies lines ever, and you have to see the scene it came from to see why: Bruno Kirby and Billy Crystal are just superb when sparking off each other (they were also excellent in "City Slickers"). This is one of my "top ten movies of all time" and it not only has a cracking story and is very funny but it also has one of the funniest scenes ever (The orgasm scene, though you shouldn't need to ask).
6. "We deal in lead, friend." Vin, "The Magnificent Seven"
I saw this before I saw "The Seven Samurai" and as remakes go, this one kicks arse. My favourite western ever and I still sniffle a little at the end "No, we lost. We always lose." *sniffle*
7. "Silk! I bet her mother spun 'em!" Calamity Jane, "Calamity Jane"
I love musicals but this is probably my favourite, mostly because it has some cracking songs and a great story. There's other great lines, but I just love this one because it's the first time in the movie Calamity fights like a woman - with bitchy words.
8. "Not entirely perfect" Lucas, "Empire Records".
Another feel good movie that I blame
lithium_doll for introducing me to :) You'll have gathered by now I'm a sucker for feel good movies and this is great. Group of teens/young adults working in a record store somehow save the store from closure. Quite a few of the cast have gone onto better things with varying levels of success - Rory Cochrane, Liv Tyler, Renee Zellweger and Anthony LaPaglia are the highest profile.
9. "Look what they make you give." The Professor, "The Bourne Identity"
Jason Bourne is a tiny God. 'Nuff said.
10."Then, after a while I won't have to remind myself to get out of bed every morning and breath in and out... " Sam Baldwin, "Sleepless in Seattle"
Just look at what I wrote for the other sappy movies on here and assume this is the same. The only movie, along with "Dead Poet's Society", to make me cry in the cinema. I'm such a sap *hangs head*
11." I'd like to think that the last thing that went through his head, other than that bullet, was how the hell **** ******** ever got the best of him." Red, "The Shawshank Redemption".
I'm quite proud that I was trumpeting this movie when it wasn't doing so well at the cinema. Now it's rightly recognised as a classic. Terrific cast, terrific story and the right guy wins. What's not to like? :)
12."Excuse me, Johnny, I've got to hang up. We're expecting a call from you any minute." - Tim, "Frankie and Johnny"
You know, considering I claim not to be a romantic, there's an awful lot of sappy movies here :P Well I don't care and this is one of the best of them. I wrote about it at some length here, so won't go over it again. Except to say, give it a try, it's a great movie.
