So I lugged my PC down to PC World, only to be told they don't handle warranty cases at their store and please go home and ring this number. *sigh* My fault for not being able to find my paperwork, I guess.
I rang the number and finally spoke to a very helpful chappie, once I'd navigated through the torturous options menus. Basically, he wants to try a reinstall of XP. This will do one of two things. It'll either solve everything - sorted! Or it'll show where, exactly, the problems are and if I need hardware replacing. Sadly, as I'm sure you'll have realised, it means blatting everything that's currently on the PC *sobs*
Having considered that, I've decided I'm going to spend a couple of days salvaging what I can off the HD. I've cleared a wodge of space off the Old!OldPC and I'm hoping it'll be relatively painless to network the two and transfer stuff off. Documents and fics can go on CD, that's easy enough. But I've got to save all my email and my tv shows, dammit. I may have to invest in an external HD or some such device.
Still, it's all one step closer to getting a working PC and at least it IS all still under warranty, so if it is hardware, it's not going to cost the earth to get fixed.
