So I lugged my PC down to PC World, only to be told they don't handle warranty cases at their store and please go home and ring this number. *sigh* My fault for not being able to find my paperwork, I guess.
I rang the number and finally spoke to a very helpful chappie, once I'd navigated through the torturous options menus. Basically, he wants to try a reinstall of XP. This will do one of two things. It'll either solve everything - sorted! Or it'll show where, exactly, the problems are and if I need hardware replacing. Sadly, as I'm sure you'll have realised, it means blatting everything that's currently on the PC *sobs*
Having considered that, I've decided I'm going to spend a couple of days salvaging what I can off the HD. I've cleared a wodge of space off the Old!OldPC and I'm hoping it'll be relatively painless to network the two and transfer stuff off. Documents and fics can go on CD, that's easy enough. But I've got to save all my email and my tv shows, dammit. I may have to invest in an external HD or some such device.
Still, it's all one step closer to getting a working PC and at least it IS all still under warranty, so if it is hardware, it's not going to cost the earth to get fixed.

If you've got the XP disc, it might be able to sort itself out if you try repairing the installation. I think it's one of the options in there when you boot from the CD.
But saving Stuff off first is always a good thing!

If both PCs have network cards, you can (in theory, at least) connect them directly with a crossover cable. I've never done this, so I don't know how well it will work. The other way is to buy a small hub or switch, then connect both PCs to the hub with a standard network cable. You might have to configure them to be in the same workgroup and set the drives to be shareable. Then you should be able to browse to them using Windows Explorer or Network Neighbourhood/My Network Places, and just drag and drop, or copy and paste files between them.

I have used a crossover cable to connect the Old!OldPC to the New!OldPC before so I'm hoping the New!NewPC will play just as nicely. It should do, both newer PCs are XP.
Must unearth my crossover cable *eyes moutain of junk in bedroom*
Thanks for the post!

Look at 23 pages of HDDs here:
http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=2267
Try 129433 at 40Gb and £47, or 129435 at 80Gb and £52. Both are powered by the PC they are connected to, so no need for an external plug socket.
If you don't need them to be self-powered, try 122786 at 160Gb and £52. That should be more than enough to back-up a PC.
