Ah loves me a long weekend *streeeeeeeeetches and purrs*
Friday there was squeeing as my copy of Alan Gordon's latest jester novel, "The Lark's Lament" landed on my doormat, courtesy of Amazon. Hee! There were plans to save it for the weekend, there were, really.....
You know I have no willpower, right?
When I scampered through the front door Friday evening, I was desperate for the loo, so I scooped up the parcel on my way past. "I'll just open it and feast my eyes!" I told myself, firmly....
Two minutes later, I was still on the loo and had read the blurb on the back, inside the covers and studied the copyright information carefully. "I'll just read the dedication..." *reads reads* And lo, chapter one lay before me...
25 minutes later, the pins and needles in my leg made me stop reading chapter two and actually get out of the bathroom :P
Only the need to see the final episode of Great British Menu and get a fix of Law and Order, cricket and baseball prevented me from reading the entire book on Friday. As it was, I finished it yesterday and was very content. Absolutely excellent book, one of his best. It's a rollicking good mystery, Feste is back to his snarky self, Claudia is as wonderful as ever, the baby is now a character in her own right and there's been an addition in the form of an Apprentice, Helga. The mystery looks simple and straightforward but then the last chapter turns everything upside down and leaves you going "Uhh. Wow. Didn't see THAT coming!" just as a good mystery should. The best news of all is the book is clearly a set up for another book, as Theo is being sent to Toulouse to become the new head Fool. Hee! So there's at least one more novel guaranteed! Hurrah!
The only worrying bit was the speech Theo and Claudia gave to Helga about what to do if they were killed. *eyes Alan Gordon sternly* That had better not be what you're planning! I tend not to forgive authors who do that to my characters! (Ref: Peter O'Donnell and Modesty Blaise).
The rest of Satuday was filled with TV and an internet chat with Diane Duane and chatting to friends, baseball and blowing things up in Dune II. Poifect!
Today there is more loafing scheduled until this evening when I have a ticket to go and see Pirates of the Caribbean 3! Yayy! Johnny! Orly! *swoons in advance*
And then the best bit of all....I don't have to go to work tomorrow! *wanders off, chortling happily*
