Cat update and Pirates! Glee!
So the cat got his final dose of eye drops today and the cat scratch tally was....NONE!!! Not a single, solitary one :) There were two instances of hiding behind the sofa and yowling unhappily and there was one morning he escaped completely because I didn't have time to prise him out from behind the sofa but otherwise, he was very well behaved. He IS such a good natured furball. *cuddles the purring kitty cat*
I went to see Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End last night. Wow! The CGI was stunning so I foresee another Oscar for the special effects teams. The film itself was very long but almost didn't drag. Almost. I have the same minor complaint as I had with DMC, in that there were scenes that could have been cut effortlessly without spoiling the movie, such as the endless hallucinations Jack has. However, as I've read elsewhere, those hallucinations only occurred when Jack was under Davy Jones' influence, which was a nice plot touch. And the crabs in the white desert were a hint at Calypso but eh. I still say trimming could have been done.
The ending. Hrm. Well it wasn't the one I wanted or expected but it was so well done, I have to forgive them for it. And I'm SO glad I waited all through the credits for the final coda because apparently that's the real happy ending. According to the writers, a scene got cut (see, they trim the important stuff and leave stuff we don't need! Dammit!) where it was said that if Calypso had been faithful to Davy, he COULD have stayed on land after the first ten years. So at the end, in the movie coda, when Will comes back in the green flash of the sun, that means he can stay with Elizabeth and their son because she's been faithful to him :) Yay! I feel better knowing that. I may have to watch the movie again to pick up all the references, apparently a second viewing really helps.
Depp was as good as ever, Rush was good value, loved loved LOVED Mackenzie Crook's moment of glory "You didn't say it right!" Who knew he had it in him, eh? Keith Richard's cameo was worth the wait too :) Genuinely touching moment when Elizabeth sees her father in the flotilla of the Dead, great acting by Knightley and Pryce. I may have sniffled a smidge. The battle scenes on the ship while they were in the maelstrom were just jaw droppingly well staged and the fight between Davy Jones and Jack was every bit as spectacular as I'd hoped. Beckett didn't really get the death he deserved, neither did Norrington, but I guess there were some storylines they just wanted to wrap up.
If I have a serious quibble at all, it's about Will throwing in his lot with Beckett to save his father. It didn't quite ring true, in that although it's entirely in character for him to want to keep his promise, I really didn't believe he'd go about it the way he did. Seemed a needless plot wrinkle to me in a film that was already full of twists and turns.
There were some lovely comedy moments though - the battle of the telescopes was hilarious - but that said, it was a far, far darker movie than I was expecting. They really pushed the certification to its limit, I feel. And if anyone thinks there won't be a fourth? I have to say they've left it wide open for a return, even if they just use Depp.
Overall, I'm glad I saw this at the cinema, it needs to be seen on a big screen at least once. I don't think I like it more than DMC, which I adored, but it's still a damn good movie. Recommended :)
*yawns* I stayed up until the wee small hours reading a book *sighs* I never learn :) I found a new Barry *swoon* Eisler book, Killing Rain, that I didn't know I had - this one was hidden in one of my rucksacks. God knows when I bought it :P Anyway, it was very, very good - which is why I finished it at nearly 6am this morning. *hangs head* I couldn't help it! Honest!
And now to bed, for 'tis work tomorrow. Bah. Hope everyone had a good weekend too :)
