Only problem I've ever had with the energy saving bulbs is that they make an annoying buzzing noise if they're the only thing on in a room.

Oh, and if you carefully explain to your mother that it is now possible to buy low energy bulbs that have been specifically designed to work with dimmer switches, and show her the details carefully printed off th'Interwebby, she'll read carefully, nod knowingly, and start "As you say, you can't get these new sorts of bulbs to work with dimmer switches..." Of course, that might be just my mum ("Okay, so we're going out on Wednesday 5th" "Yes, Rik, I'm righting that on the calendar now... Thursday the sixth...")
