2. A show that you wish more people were watching

Leverage, no question. I keep nudging people towards it *glares at [livejournal.com profile] jenni411* (And while I'm at it, I shall glare at [livejournal.com profile] commoncomitatus about Burn Notice) and it's got "good enough to get renewed" viewing figures (all hail the tv gods) but everyone should be watching this show, dammit! It's smart, clever, terrific cast and the showrunners really know what they're doing in terms of balancing action with character development. There are many network show runners that could be taking tips on how to create tension and excitement without going over the top or having half the characters sleep with the other half (I'm looking at you, Shondra Rhimes).

Runners up:-

Nurse Jackie - a very black dramedy with the truly outstanding Edi Falco in the title role. It's doing very well and has already been renewed for S3, I believe (S2 finale was last night), but it could be a lot bigger. This one gets me because the lead character really isn't that likeable - she's a cheater and a liar with a painkiller addiction - and yet, between the terrific writing, the superb acting and a fantastic supporting cast, it keeps you watching. Haven't seen the finale yet and it's the only finale that I've been impatient to get home to see (apart from Justified's, but that's for tomorrow :D)

In Plain Sight - another one where the lead character isn't terribly likeable most of the time, but has juuuust enough redeeming features to keep you watching. Plus the snark is a thing of great love :) It also has the hook of making you root for criminals a lot of the time - the setting is the Witness Protection Programme of the US Marshals and it features a different case every week. Just enough personal development to keep the characters real and, again, the cast has the acting chops to really deliver. Try it some time :)

OOoh please squee with me over Nurse Jackie! And what are you making of IPS so far? I'm really missing Eleanor but not minding less Jinx and Brandi.

Mmm, I don't know that I have the love for Nurse Jackie. I've only seen the second season and what's airing now. It's good, and intriguing characters, but I need to go and netflix season 1 so I can see if they ever give a better explanation for why she takes drugs and the whole eddie deal.

IPS, I have to say they are doing a better job than expected. It's always been such an uneven show...I actually miss Brandi's bf/ex whatever he is (that she borrowed the money from) and feel like we really need to see that conflict resolved. The brother seems a little out of left field, but hopefully they'll make it pay off more than the sister....

Nurse Jackie - Season 1 starts in the middle of the story, really. Eddie and Jackie are already a thing, and Jackie is already hooked on painkillers, which it is implied is how the relationship with Eddie started, because he can get her pills. It is also said (I think in the opening narration) that Jackie has a bad back and I've always assumed this was the trigger for the drug addiction but it's never been explained because the only person that knows IC is Jackie and she's in total denial. (This is not a season spoiler, btw, you can glean all this from the first ep of S1).

And what's airing now, btw, IS the second season. Finale was last night, I've just watched it. It didn't push things as far as I thought it would but I suspect they're really setting things up for S3.

IPS, Brandi's bf is still around, just not as much. At least they didn't ditch him completely like poor Rafe *sniffles* I liked him. You're right that it's uneven but when it's good, it's very, very good :) And even the not so good is still watchable.

Hee! I'll accept the Burn Notice glaring, since I've still totally not got around to it yet. Annnnd I'll accept The Dress as penance for the Leverage glaring. Because I am merciful and not for any other reason at all, obviously. *g*

What did you make of the Nurse Jackie finale? I am glad that she's been found out on so many levels, but I am wondering if they're going to do like they did at the start of S2 and just skip ahead without resolving what happened since we last saw the characters. I don't think they can keep dancing around Jackie's need for help forever without us getting fed up of the character.

I think the show needs her to be addicted or the series will fade, but she is going to lose everything. I liked that she was found out, too.

Yeah, the start of S2 was strange!

I like the Zooey story arc, but her bf looks just like her.
