mitchy: (Wimbledon)

Hee! England won! And what the hell is on the strawberries at Wimbledon??

Well they gave me several heart attacks in the process but England got through to the next round. Where we'll meet Germany. Oh joy. Oh well at least we got out of the group stages :D

Also many congrats to the USA who also went through today. I'm glad because you were robbed of a goal at least twice that I know of. Also you played every match as if it was your last and if we'd done that, we'd be playing Ghana on Sunday, not Germany. A lesson to be observed there.

I got to see history in the making today. Last night at Wimbledon, the match between Nicolas Mahut (FRA) and John Isner (USA) finished 2 sets all when play was suspended. Today they returned to Court 18 to resolve the final set. They played...and played...and played....and played. At 59 games all, play was suspended again and the two combatants will have to return to tomorrow to try and win it. No, that isn't a typo. FIFTY NINE GAMES ALL in the FIFTH SET. Today's play lasted around 7 hours, the match total is now 10 hours long. It is the longest tennis match in history. Not just Wimbledon history mark you, world tennis history. Holy cow o_0 Also, they've both broken the record for number of aces served in a single match, with Isner rocketing down 98 and Mahut right on his heels with 95 (at least one of those saved a match point, btw). It's mind blowing stuff. And I'll be at work tomorrow, probably, although they're scheduled to be the third match out. If the previous two matches last a decent time, I might yet get in when it's 90 all or something ;D

Anyway, time to catch up on the meme. You'll be pleased to see I'm brief this time around :D

Day 16 - Your guilty pleasure show

Yeh, I do occasionally insist on certain standards for my shows - sloppy writing and continuity annoys the ever-loving crap out of me - but my shows don't have to have a lot of depth. Hell, I'll settle for "puddles in a heatwave" levels if the actors amuse me and the snark is good :) Xena could often move me but it was mostly shallow fantasy fun and it did it well, to give it credit. My current guilty pleasure is NCIS:LA. Oh they throw in some drama - the last 4 episodes were pretty intense - but yeh, it's all about the pretty and the scenery and the only things that really keep me watching are that I like Chris O'Donnell a lot and the character of Hetty (as played by Linda Hunt) is a tiny goddess. I do have hopes they might shake it up a smidge in Season 2, though. Please, please, show, get rid of Nate!!

Day 17 - Favorite mini series

Not something I watch a lot of nowadays (and no, I haven't seen Band of Brothers, I will though). However, it was all the rage in the 80's and I watched any number of trashy mini-series. My Mom and I loved 'em and two of our favourites were Lace (based on a Shirley Conran novel) and For The Term of His Natural Life (another one based on a novel, although I can't be arsed to find out the author). Lace had almost no redeeming features at all, we just loved it for the angst, clothes and hair (it was the 80's, people!). FTTOHNL was about a convict sent to Australia and how he subsequently survives. Slightly more worthy and I liked it a hell of a lot more than the book, which was a total downer. Hmm, wonder if they ever made it to DVD? *sidles off. Casually*

OMG THAT TENNIS MATCH. OMG OMG.

What the hell are they going to do about the scheduling, though!? Whoever wins is supposed to play their second-round match tomorrow. SURELY they can't still expect it to go ahead?!

I'm so confused. And impressed!

Yeh, the scheduling sucks but I know they've done it before. I expected it to be the first game on an outside court at 12 noon, give 'em a chance to finish it and the winner to cool down before the next match. Crazy thing is, one of 'em (Isner, I think), is in the doubles too and has a rescheduled doubles match pending as well. Mind boggling.

I have much love for the commentary that [livejournal.com profile] tyrell linked to, including such favourites as "Is it death? I think it might be death." and "7.45pm: What happens if we steal their rackets?"
