Things Wot I Have Done Lately and Things Wot I'm Planning To Do

I was bored last Saturday but the weather wasn't quite good enough to tempt me into a long drive to my favourite beach. So I poked the web for local goings on and noticed that Stevenage FC were playing at home. I've been once before when I took [livejournal.com profile] jenni411 to her first football game, and really enjoyed it. There's a terrific atmosphere there, it's easy for me to get to and there's loads of free parking. So I hopped in the car and headed on over.

It was great! Ticket prices have gone up a smidge but it cost about the same as getting a large pizza delivered and was infinitely better for me :D I was pleased to see that while the stadium was by no means full, there was a more than sizeable contingent of home fans there, particularly in the East Stand. For non-football cognoscenti, traditionally one end of the a ground behind the goal is always the "home" end, where the noisiest fans congregate. At Stevenage, while there is a home end, the bulk of the fans pack the East Stand which is a terraced stand (i.e. no seats) in the old style and runs the length of the pitch. This means when they get going, there is nowhere on the pitch the opposing players can go to get away from the cheering :D Creates a cracking atmosphere.

The opponents were Crewe Alexander and I was impressed with the number of their fans that were there. I can only assume they were mostly transplanted locals because I can't imagine all of them travelled down from Crewe for the day :) It was a pretty good game, both teams attacked lots but both had really decent defence so it was never going to be a goal fest. Stevenage scored first but Crewe equalised after half time with an absolute cracker of a goal, a curled shot from the edge of the box. Then Stevenage had a man (rightly) sent off for a second bookable offence, which made things tricky. That said, they could have won it, they created some chances but it wasn't to be. Good game though although Stevenage won't be too pleased. As I heard one Stevenage supporter say as we left the ground "I'm not quite as pissed off this week as I was last week!"

One hysterical thing was that before the match, the referee decided Crewe's away kit was too similar to stevenage's home kit and as a result, Crewe had to wear Stevenage's all yellow away strip. I can't tell HOW confused I was for the first few minutes of the match when I kept seeing the same name and number on the back of the shirts for both teams! Fortunately I was clued in by other fans but for a while there I thought I was hallucinating :P On the football highlights programme on BBC1 later, it was noted that no-one had ever seen anything like that happen before. Cool! I saw a bit of football history and should be useful trivia knowledge for quizzes :D

Tuesday night was cheap ticket night at the cinema so I went and saw Inception, again :D I was considering rewatching Salt but [livejournal.com profile] halcyon_shift used her evil Jedi mind tricks on me so I saw Inception instead. Newsflash: it was still brilliant :) I'm tempted to post some meta, just to lure a Lithy into discussion about it. Maybe at the weekend :) Next week, I may well go and rewatch Salt. Dammit, I want the DVDs of both these movies rightthissecondnow! *stamps foot, whines*

In three weeks time, I'll be off to the States - Seattle and Portland in the first week, San Francisco (and Bouchercon) in the second week. Reckon I'll be coming back to work for a rest :D Still got to book hotels for the Seattle/Portland bit but Jenni should have her flight plans sorted by tonight, so we can dot the i's and cross the t's this week.

I'm also pondering a Christmas break. It's not easy - what I want is somewhere quiet, remote, self-catering, preferably near the coast but with a high speed internet connection :P My online searches haven't bourne much fruit because rentals seem to assume large parties of people, with prices to match, so I may throw myself at the mercy of a travel agent. I was seriously considering doing New York for Christmas. It's still an option but really, I think I should save my money and do a proper 2 week NYC holiday next year. I've never been in NYC longer than 4 days at a time, so it'd be good to have a decent spell there. Plus there will be baseball and I'll be able to go watch the Mets, oh yes :D

Work is so meh, 'm not going to bore you with my boredom. Suffice to say, the job search continues.

I envy you, going to Bouchercon. One of these days, I swear, I'm gonna go, too!

*grins* Well keep an eye on the main website, see where the 2012 con is going to be. It should, theoretically, be on the East Coast which will be closer to you! 2011 is St Louis which is possibly too far away? (My geographical knowledge of the US away from the coasts is rather poor :P)

I've got the site bookmarked now--thanks to you, dear. :-)

What would be really excellent is if B'con was held in Charlotte, NC, 'cos then I could couple a visit to rellies with the glam of the con. ;-)
