Because all the cool kids are doing it :D (Stolen from half my flist, too many to name)

1. What did you do in 2011 that you'd never done before?

Enjoyed work. Seriously. Apart from maybe 2 or 3 days, the rest of the time I woke up in the morning and was willing to head out to work. When have you ever heard me say THAT? o_0

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I am leary of making resolutions. As a wise man said once, New Years Resolutions are just a To-Do list for the first week of January. However, that said, I really do want to get out of the house more, and not turn into a total slug. That's less of a resolution than a need :P

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

No.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

No, thank allllll the gods.

5. What countries did you visit?

The USA, as usual :D New York and St Louis, this year, in two separate visits.

6. What would you like to have in 2012 that you lacked in 2011?

Umm, actually I'd like what I had in 2011 that I currently lack in 2012 - a permanent job :)

7. What date(s) from 2011 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

I am CRAP at remembering specific dates but I had a few good things this year. Saw Tennant and Tate in "Much Ado About Nothing", twice. Saw Sharon Gless live in "A Round Heeled Woman" and saw Fascinating Aida twice. All terrific events. (Meeting [livejournal.com profile] annuala for the first time after years of being thwarted was lovely, too. Finally got that monkey off our backs!) Also it was [livejournal.com profile] jenni411's *mumblecoughcensored* birthday this year and I had ooodles of fun plotting :D

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Buckling down and making a will. Beyond time. Being happy and productive at work - I got a very good performance review :)

9. What was your biggest failure?

To remember to enjoy things while they last and not make myself unhappy by reminding myself they won't last forever all the time.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

No, actually, I had a pretty healthy year. One bad cold knocked me flat for 3 days but probably wouldn't have been so bad if I hadn't tried to work through it. Not being in an office where everyone brought in germs from their kids probably helped lots.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

Two items - the big New York Mets fleecey hoodie I got back in Spring. It's been a godsend this winter, it is gorgeously warm and cosy. And my Kindle, which granted I only just bought before the year ended but I'm deeply in love :)

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

Certain sections of sports fans restored some of my faith in human nature, as did those brave people who continue to speak out against social injustices, all around the world, particularly in places where such protests could get them jailed and/or tortured and killed.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

Governments, everywhere. I heard a great joke from Jo Brand, she was talking about Nick Clegg but you can use any name at all in there - "I have a soft spot for [insert politician's name here] - face down in a marsh with my boot on his head"

14. Where did most of your money go?

Hmm. Apart from bills, the two holidays I guess. And all the shows I've seen :D

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Probably Much Ado About Nothing, but see list of lovely things for Q7 other things that I happily squeaked about :)

16. What song will always remind you of 2011?

Sorry, can't really think of one.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Happier
ii. thinner or fatter? *prods pudge* Prolly fatter.
iii. richer or poorer? Bout the same.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Exercise :P

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Loafing - which is a shame as I'm so good at it ;)

20. How did you spend Christmas and New Year's Eve?

Christmas was here at home. There was the traditional brunch of scrambled eggs on toast with smoked salmon and (several) glass(es) of Buck's Fizz. Then I cackled over my presents, watched a movie, and tuned in to the Queen's Speech at 3pm. Then there was reading on the shiny new Kindle before I cooked roast lamb, roast spuds, cauliflower cheese, roast parsnips and peas, with apple crumble for dessert. And I managed to get it ready for 90 seconds before Dr Who started. I was quite proud of that.

New Year's Eve I went and saw "Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows" at the cinema and throughly enjoyed myself. I was going to eat out but couldn't get a table at my favourite place so ate at home instead. Then I watched silly movies and Jools Holland's Hootenanny until midnight when I switched channels to listen to the chimes from Big Ben and watch a truly superb firework display over the Thames. (Jool's Holland's show was one of the very best of his shows I've watched. I've got a new list of singers to track down - Betty Wright, Jessie J, Imelda May, Cara Emerald etc. In addition, Cyndi Lauper and Sandi Shaw showed they've still got serious musical chops. Brilliant!)

21. Who did you spend the most time on the phone with?

Customers - I rarely use the telephone to talk to people socially, I usually text. Actually something I want to improve on, not everyone lives on the internet like I do :)

22. Did you fall in love in 2011?

Yeh, I had (have) a dreadful crush on someone. Sadly not, and never going to be, reciprocated.

23. How many one-night stands?

None.

24. What's your favorite TV program?

Hi, my name's Mitchy, TV-aholic, have we met? :P Umm - still loving NCIS:LA, Justified, Leverage, Mythbusters,White Collar, Covert Affairs, Burn Notice and Criminal Minds. Fell out of love with In Plain Sight (which is getting only one more season anyway), Big Bang Theory, Eureka, Nikita and Private Practice (although I may well just marathon the latter sometime). Adored Detroit 1-8-7, Off The Map and Chase but all were cruelly cancelled (sobs). Discovered Blue Bloods which I like very much indeed.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

Hate is a very strong thing and I try and avoid it. No.

26. What was the best book you read in 2011?

Hi, I'm Mitchy, book-aholic, have we met? :P I can't think of one particular book, I haven't read anything i haven't squeaked happily about afterwards.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Don't think I really found anything new 2011, although I've got a good list to work on for this year :D

28. What did you want and get?

Finally got a Kindle - i've been threatening to get an e-reader forever.

29. What did you want and not get?

A smart phone....that's going to be the next purchase, I suspect.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?

*thinks* Probably Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt 2 - that delivered everything I wanted it to and was a fitting end to the series.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I was 43 *sobs* and I spent my birthday with the ever lovely [livejournal.com profile] halcyon_shift and [livejournal.com profile] doccy who spoiled me rotten :D

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Not having to take voluntary redundancy. OK, I didn't HAVE to but I really couldn't face staying with School Funding. Alternatively, I'd have loved to have been able to stay with the Energy Management Team longer but it just wasn't to be.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2011?

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!! I don't iron anything, what makes you think I have a fashion concept? The closest to a concept I have is "So long as it's clean".

34. What kept you sane?

My friends, as usual. They know who they are *hugglesquishes*

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Well, Tracie Thoms still makes me squee. David Tennant in dress whites was a sight for sore eyes :D Other than that, just the usual TV pretty.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

I try and avoid politics but it was a big year in a lot of ways for social unrest. The riots here were a symptom of just how pissed off most people are with their lot right now. It's not been dealt with well and it's not going to go away. The uprisings in various countries around the middle east are encouraging on one level but I'm wondering what sort of regime will replace the old ones. That whole area is such a powder keg, it frightens me.

37. Who did you miss?

Well, [livejournal.com profile] jenni411 is stuck on the other side of the puddle, and [livejournal.com profile] halcyon_shift and [livejournal.com profile] doccy are stuck in the wilds of Darkest Cornwall, so I missed them occasionally (but thank gods for the internet so we can keep in touch). Mum and Dad, as usual.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

[livejournal.com profile] elfsausage whom I met when I FINALLY (at what, the 4th attempt?) met [livejournal.com profile] annuala - we got on like a house on fire :)

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011:

Take time to breathe.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:

Can't think of anything in particular that'd be apt.
Mood:: 'contemplative' contemplative
