Demon can suck my balls

So last week I got a wonderful piece of mail from my ISP, Demon. "Blah blah bandwidth blah blah usage blah you're using too much, stoppit" was the gist. Apparently, when I wasn't looking, they introduced a bandwidth cap Fair Usage Policy, and they consider 50GB per 30 day rolling period to be fair maximum usage. I blew through this last Wednesday and I can only assume that watching BBC shows in iPlayer instead of downloading must have contributed to this. So yesterday, I got a second piece of mail saying my bandwidth will be throttled until usage drops, suck on 128kps between 9am and 11pm until we decide you're being good.

Screw that, I'm moving to BT, where for exactly the same as I'm paying now, I'll get unlimited downloads and (probably) better download speeds and possibly a shiny BT Hub. So if I disappear for a couple of days in the next couple of weeks (it's supposed to take place without loss of service - AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!) that'll be the reason why. Not sure what I'll do about email but I'll get the message out about new email addys etc nearer the time.

Sad way to end nearly 14 years with Demon but one of the reasons I went with them in the first place was lack of bandwidth cap and I ain't putting up with being throttled when their service has been steadily deteriorating for years and I've stuck with them. Enough is enough.

*determined nods* Stay tuned!

*headdesk*

So I tried to log in to the internet a few hours ago only to find that, for some reason, my password wasn't being recognised by my ISP. I haven't changed it, it's saved as part of the auto-login function so it's the same damn password I used yesterday and the day before and the day before that. This happens periodically and no-one's ever been able to explain to me why, although there are occasions when it's not me, it's Demon's servers snapping one of their rubber bands again.

I left it a couple of hours, slurped tea, watched more West Wing. Tried again, still nothing. Whimpering, I called the technical helpline and waited. And waited. And waited. Twice, actually, after the first 30 minute wait, I had to go to the loo. In total I was on hold for 57 minutes, with no indication of how many people were waiting before me or that there were any real, live human beans anywhere near the phone.

I just tried to log in again, out of sheer boredom, and it worked fine. *sobs*

Clearly a rubber band snapped, which might explain the hellish wait. But even so, 57 minutes? I know this isn't a record by any means but....really? That's what my £x is buying me these days?

I've been pondering switching ISPs for a while but I have to admit, 99% of the time, the service is pretty good. And really, aren't all ISPs much of a muchness these days? Soooooo any of you have any horror stories of ISPs to avoid like the plague (I've heard really bad things about Tiscali)? Or want to sing the praises of your current ISP providers? I'm all ears......

NB: One huge, huge advantage of being with demon is I pay nothing extra for the right to download as much as I like. Given my TV viewing habits, this is pretty much the main reason I'm likely to stay put. But still, tell me what's out there, I'm out of the loop these days.
