It will be great fun if I get there. Totally, completely crazy, but great fun :)

Hey, you've flown to the US fairly recently, haven't you? What's the word on the size of the hand luggage you're allowed now? I'm only going for 2 nights, I'm thinking I should be able to get away with no checked in luggage at all, assuming I can take a backpack on board.

"Recently" in the sense of "last year, but we're flying out again the day after tomorrow" ;)

Depends on the size of your backpack. I routinely use one of those conference-freebie rucksacks as a laptop bag and also as my hand luggage, so if you're thinking of something that sort of size, you should be fine (don't forget there are still restrictions on liquids etc.) From where, and with whom, are you flying?

Not sure with whom, likely to be AA or BA though, maaybe Virgin (thank GOD I didn't book the airline tix for this weekend, or I'd be so screwed right now). Also very likely will have to go from Heathrow *shudderfits* Dammit :P

here are the BA regs on hand luggage -- note that you can take two bits of hand luggage now (useful for you, I should think!). Virgin appears to be one piece plus a handbag at the moment -- I note that it's amazing what you can fit in a sufficiently large handbag in terms of books -- and AA looks like it's just one piece of carry-on.

I personally don't mind Heathrow but then we live about equidistant from Heathrow and Gatwick, and Luton and Stansted are an utter pain in the arse to get to (easier to go from Southampton, for heavens' sake)

*checks dimensions of her rucksack* Excellent, looks like I'm good with all three airlines :D Gleee!

And yes, I imagine the two biggies are easier for you. I'd love to fly from Stansted, but AA don't seem to be doing that yet. Although it's supposed to happen at some point. Can't wait, myself, it'll mean I can avoid the M25 completely every trip :)

PS: crazy... well, I've flown to the US for a gig before now, so I can't exactly comment there ;)

I took a backpack as carryon luggage last month, & didn't have any trouble. And you know what I cram into a "carryon" ....

*gigglefits* I am usually in awe of your luggage, yes :D Looks like I'll be fine in terms of bag sizes. I pretty much won't bring anything I can't buy in a drug store when I'm over there in terms of wash kit, and even with my clothes in my rucksack, it still means I will have plenty of room for chocolate for Jenni's :D

Which of course means I'll have room to bring loot back *plots happily*
