Well that was fun!
I went in to London today, to go and see an exhibition of cat art at the Chris Beetles Gallery. I'd never heard of it before, but the website made it sound more of a gallery for buyers than casual visitors. But the exhibition was free and well publicised so I went along. It's one of many, many small galleries located in the area south of Piccadilly, and it's the sort of place where you have to ring a doorbell to be let in. But once you're in and you've been pointed in the right direction, they leave you alone to browse happily.
Which I did :D I couldn't afford any of the paintings I saw, of course, but it was lovely to see what was there. There were over a 100 paintings and sketches in all, from five or six different artists. Louis Wain was the main artist there, but I actually preferred the other works. Lesley Fotherby's watercolours were delightful and she really caught the characters of the cats she drew. Susan Herbert was another artist whose pictures reminded me I need to do the lottery tomorrow. Many of her works are based on famous works of art, be it paintings or literary characters. The slide show I've linked to gives you an idea. Her "Sherlock" picture made me drool in an unlady-like manor but not only was it out of my price range but it was already sold. Darn it!
Having left the gallery, plotting to go back sometime soon and rummage through their cartoon collection, I wandered up Piccadilly, had an iced berry tea in a local cafe (dee-licious) and eyed the open top tour buses parked outside the Underground. It would have been a good thing to do today but they were a bit pricey (I'm sure they've put the prices up for the Olympics!) and with only a few hours left before I wanted to go home, I wouldn't have got a lot of benefit out of the ticket. Next time I go to London and the weather's nice, I'll go early enough to do the open top bus tour again :)
So I settled for basking in the sun and then headed up to Leicester Square and the Round Table pub, where I sat outside, people watched and slurped a very large orange and lemonade. Was lovely. I was pondering food but wasn't really hungry. I was very happy to note that the Round Table will be holding a cider festival from the 10th - 23rd September so I strongly suspect I will be going back into London next week :D :D :D
Finally I wended my way home, where there was fussing of cat and a protracted nap.
And now 'm cooking food and watching England thrash Moldova in the first qualifying game of the 2014 World Cup. Hurrah!
